Playa Kalki information
Westpunt
Playa Kalki, also known as Alice in Wonderland is one of the best dive sites in Curacao. Divers, snorkelers and sunbathers will find a perfect spot for a day at the beach. The name 'Kalki' (limestone in Papiamento) refers to the limestone in the cliffs. The small creek is located in West Point, just below the Kura Hulanda Lodge & Beach Club. The beach has no facilities, Kura Hulanda guests can use the resorts' facilities.
Playa Kalki is among the top 10 dive sites, so you underwater or on the beach regularly take other divers. You can bring equipment to the beach via a pedestrian staircase from the parking lot, or go down packed. The sea bed consists of sand and coral debris. Visibility under water averages about 30 meters and reaching the coral wall, which has a fall of 18 meters, takes only 3 minutes swimming.
There is usually a quiet wave and the flow is weak, although the flow occasionally strenthen up. Beware of jet skis and smaller boats. Look for the green moray eels, crabs and the mushroom-shaped coral formations, but also the diverse multitude of colorful reef fish. When you go deeper than 30 meters, you find large areas of table corals and coral leafs.
The shallow reefs have been severly damaged by storm in the past, so snorkling close to the beach might not be as rewarding as it used to be.
